Abstract
In order to create a balance in the environment and reduction of deleterious effects of fossil energy consumption of the Earth, modern strategies for continuity and sustainability of the environment and energy saving that is the primary prophecy of sustainable development, has been presented. Strategies used in the traditional Iranian architecture are the origins of the environmental sustainability principles in different climates. This strategy has been changed during the time and has the disadvantages of using local material construction. In this article, we try to use modern and technological techniques by integrating natural energies and design according to the climate of the area, which they are the nature of the traditional architecture with the contemporary sustainable architecture of the west. After that, we can lead the contemporary architecture of Iran to the sustainability. This study is descriptive and analytical. It uses publications, articles, books, and electronic resources information to gather. Finally, by integrating these methods used in the contemporary sustainable architecture in the West (especially United States of America) with traditional Iranian architecture we can provide a list for architecture and urban design to advance humanity toward the sustainability.

The Effect of Urban Design on Urban Environment Quality Using Geographic Information Systems (Case Study: Ghaemshahr City)

J. Art Arch. Stud., 3(2): 79-86, 2014; pii:S238315531400012-3
Abstract
Since the beginning of urbanism and following his nature, human being has aimed at his tendency to establish order. Urban design is also developed in the framework of the same general need to order and in response to the special demands of the society. Cities – or if put it more properly – biological communities are created to provide certain objectives for their residents. In design and planning, quantitative methods and analysis are replaced with artistic creativity. And, due to the nature of the issues, a kind of new urban design known as intellectual design appears for artistic design. This study describes the method of evaluating the aspects of urban design in the context of Geographical Information System (GIS). The relationship between construction environment and urban design is examined using questionnaires structured based on urban design aspects in terms of four entrance spaces, knot, path, dead alley, and in Ghaemshahr neighborhood scale where the number of neighborhoods were 36 with totally different uses. Samples were chosen in random systematic way. The content of the questionnaires were coded, quantified, and entered into EXCEL software. Upon being classified and after elementary analysis, they were transferred to GIS so as to be scored based on the aspects mentioned. To zone the quantified qualitative indices, the weight percent of responses and scores was applied. Quantitative zoning of the indices can be used to predict their aspects in gap points. And, by a quantitative integration of indices and with respect to the essence of citizens’ mental image, it is possible to take action to reach a classified plot of the quality of urban environment.

J. Art Arch. Stud., 3(2): 87-94, 2014; pii:S238315531400013-3
Abstract
Constructing new streets in the historic fabric of cities and impressing modernism and automobile have created undefined spaces without boundaries which are not related to the surrounding areas which can be considered as the Urban Lost Spaces. Vacant lands deteriorated urban areas and half - destroyed buildings in large and small sizes left from the construction of new streets within Old Yazd are lost spaces provided suitable situation for redevelopment Old Yazd. Movement and communication, increasingly is dominated on public space followed by missing a lot of cultural values and meanings. The concept of leisure time in Yazd is moving to outside of houses and neighborhood centers and new social demands have arisen from the new urban streets. So the threat of the urban lost spaces in Old Yazd can be changed to an opportunity to create vitality and dynamic urban spaces by making leisure - culture spaces and adapting to new recreational demands. For designing leisure-cultural places in urban lost space of the Basij Boulevard edge the factors are used such as maintaining continuity, controlling perspectives, restricting spaces, and the continuity of edges as well as the combination of inside and outside spaces.

J. Art Arch. Stud., 3(2): 95-101, 2014; pii:S238315531400014-3
Abstract
Tourism industry as an influential section in developing countries has always been one of the dominant bases in sustainable urban development. Sustainable development needs programming, management, and exploitation of resources. One of the important fields with respect to its potential of history, culture, and environment that can have vital role in national development is tourism. Sarein is located in west part of Ardabil which is a virgin nature away from the hustle and bustle of crowded cities and can turn into one of the main tourist hubs in virtue of environmental and natural characteristics as well as cultural and human attractions. From a systematic point of view, one of the notable features of this origin can be the minimal amount of time of 15 min to 1 hour needed to visit all tourist and ecotourism attractions which is unparalleled all over the world. These attractions include hot spas (more than 60 with different remedial traits), ski slopes, volcanic landscapes, forestall views, mountainous climate, and cultural relics and so forth. This work considers the ways of exploiting existent potentials as well as taking advantage of library studies and historical records and random sample of Sarein with the aim of introducing some suitable guidelines considering ecotourism and historical and cultural attractions of this city which will correspond with sustainable urban development. The outcomes can appear as groundwork for sustainable urban development in huge policy-makings of society, ministry of road, urbanism, cultural heritage organization and tourism, municipality, educational groups and so on.

Zarrabi B, Alibeighynejad M.
J. Art Arch. Stud., 3(2): 102-107, 2014; pii:S238315531400015-3
Abstract
Since the issue of global warming has become an important matter, scientists strongly have been seeking alternative energy resources for fossil fuels which are the main cause of global warming and in consequence researchers’ efforts have been increased to reduce energy consumption in the buildings. In this regard, a new method named underfloor air distribution has been proposed that is widely used in the commercial buildings. The main purpose of this investigation was to introduce underfloor air distribution system as a new mechanism to achieve the sustainability in the buildings. In order to achieve this goal, firstly, the library and analytic methods have been used to define some concepts include sustainability, the under floor air distribution system and the advantages of this system. Then, in order to prove this hypothesis that it can be achieved the suitability by using this system, the effect of under floor air distribution system on sustainability dimensions was evaluated and finally a solution was presented to use this system properly.

Abstract
After the end of Sassanid era and the conversion of Iranians to Islam, although there appeared relatively important changes in Iranians` beliefs, the architecture does not lose its way and principle. The present study is an attempt to examine Parthian and Sassanid architectural elements that have contributed to the formation of patterns and architecture of Islamic mosques .In this study; we first identify the principles and patterns of the mosque. The history of their creation in the architecture of Iran and the role of the Parthian and Sassanid architecture to establish the principles and patterns in Islamic mosques are analyzed. As a result, Islamic Architecture is not from the Arab culture of nomadism as Burkhart pays attention to and not as his mystical interpretation of the yard, is an allegorical paradise. Islamic architecture is a blend of artistic principles and patterns that began thousands of years ago based on the formation and history of monotheism and valuable theme which has continued until now.
